Classed Choropleth map

This type of map uses different classes to separate the data, in this map areas of Australia are put into classes based off the number of deaths.

This proportional circle map shows the number of classes offered by state for cartography. Each circle on this map is linked to a value proportionate to its size.

Range Graded Proportional Circle Map


This is a range graded proportional circle map of the Hispanic population by state. Each circle has a set value in proportion to its size but only uses the range to map the data.

Isolines are used to often display weather pheromones but can also be used to display other types of data. This is the most common way we see isolines, meteorologists use these to show wind speeds or temperatures over a large area.

This is a correlation matrix of various forms of currency in relation to the USD, S&P stock, etc. This form of mathematic display of data shows how each item is correlated with one another.

Isopleth maps use data in a third dimension to standardize across space. The lines used in these maps are separated with standard intervals like in this one using 10 as its interval.

An isopach map uses contour lines to show the thickness of a specific substance such as rocks. This isopach map shows the different thicknesses of Tioga Bentonite in the mid-Atlantic region.

Statistical maps are used to show data that was gathered about an area for some sort of variable. This is a statistical map of African internet usage from 1995 to 1996.

This type of graph is used to show data in various ways. These graphs take into account the width of the lines plotted on the graph for dimensional data sets. This is an image of an iris data set normalized for a clean look.

Bilateral Graphs

Bilateral graphs are used to display data between two data sets simultaneously. This graph shows the United States trade deficit for the years 2009 and 2010. In this case the y-axis portrays the deficit in billions by intervals of 10 while the x-axis shows the months.

Lorenz Curve

The Lorenz curve is a tool used in economics to measure how far a society is from the equality line or how much inequalities are experienced. This is measured on a x and y axis with percent of income on the y-axis and percent of population on the x-axis.

Box plots are a common mathematical tool used to show information of the data sets. This is an example of a box plot showing the data of how much energy is used for each machine.

This is a graphical representation of wind direction recorded at the Fresno air terminal during April. Wind rose is a method of showing data in a graph tailored to wind.

Scatter plots are used to show the correlation between to variables measured in a data set. This is a simple example of a positive correlation in the data.

Index value plot

An Index value plot is used to standardize data over a time period. This is the data of the snow melt in Antarctica and was measured using different methods from 1980 until 2008.

A cartogram is used when a cartographer uses data figures to reflect the size of an area on the map. This is a map that shows each states output of goods, it is reflected in the size of the state. Notice how states in the mid-west are very small in comparison to their actual area.

This is a map that uses circles to show the German bloodline in the Chicago area.  A Proportional Circle Map uses various sized circles to show a certain amount of data at a specific coordinate.

DRG

Digital Raster Graphics (DRG) are the simplest form of digital topographic maps used by the United States Geological Service. This is a DRG image of Bushkill, Pennsylvania; you are able to see rivers and lakes in this image.

A histogram is used to shows the distribution of data. The data is put on a scale and measured by the number of standard deviations away from the data mean.

This is a dot distribution map of the United States population in 2000, the dots that have formed clusters show the areas of greater populations. This map type is used when a researcher wants to display data patterns visually in a space.

This propaganda map was used to persuade Japanese to go to war. These types of maps have been used throughout history to convince the reader whatever the map maker had on their agenda.

Doppler Radar

This is a Doppler radar image of Hurricane Frances making landfall in Florida. Doppler radar is technology that the news stations show their viewers when there is some sort of storm that has the potential to affect the surrounding areas.

In this map of the United States air pressure the bluish colors are the isotachs. An isotach are colors that are shaded to show the common wind speeds. This could be helpful in locating weather patterns and pressure systems.

Flow Map

Flow maps are used to chart the movement of various things through space. This is a map of traffic flows throughout European countries using red lines and the thicker the line the more people traveled through that country.

Isobar



Isobars are a weather mapping technique to display air pressure, this can be used to help predict weather patterns. This is a map of Australia displaying the different air pressures surrounding high and low pressures as well as a tropical cyclone.

A population profile uses population statistics separated age group and sex. This is a population profile of the United States in 2010, the age groups are along the y-axis and separated into intervals of four while the population is along the x-axis and separated into intervals of three.

Climograph


This is a climograph of Memphis, Tennessee you can see that as precipitation goes up in the summer the temperature also goes down. A climagraph is a chart that displays precipitation and temperature of an area throughout a year based on the months.

Hypsometric maps are a type of topographic map that uses different colors to display the varying elevations. This is a map of France, the green illustrates the lower lands while the lighter yellowish color shows the higher elevations.

This is a thematic map of the population density throughout the United States. In this map it uses the state boundaries to show their populations. A thematic map is used to show different types of data in a geographic space.

Digital Elevation Model

The Digital Elevation Model, a model used by the USGS,  uses a 3 dimensional picture to show an areas elevation. The picture can also be rotated to show the viewer more detail. This picture shows the elevation that surrounds a river.

PLSS Map

The Public Land Survey System uses a  land partitioning system  that takes a systematic approach  to divide up an area. This Map shows the arpent sections found in Louisiana, despite being formed before the PLSS they are treated as a part of the system.
